DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW
The Center for Korean Studies (CKS) is dedicated to the advancement of
research and teaching on Korea. Housed at the Institute of East Asian
Studies (IEAS), CKS programs include colloquia, research, conferences,
visiting scholar programs, and K-12 outreach. CKS provides research grants
annually to Berkeley faculty, awards postdoctoral fellowships to promising
young scholars in the field, and provides increasingly large numbers of
graduate fellowships. It maintains a busy visiting scholar program serving
both academics and other professionals. With recently expanded interest and
opportunities for the study with Korea, CKS is one of the fastest growing
area centers at Berkeley, serving as the focal point for organized research
activity on Korea on campus and in the region.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As the primary full-time staff administrator, the Program Director develops,
coordinates and carries out, in consultation with the Center Chair and
associated faculty, the organized research activities and programming agenda
of the Center. The incumbent oversees all aspects of the day-to-day
operations of the Center, including organizing center activities, leading
staff, supervising student assistants, and serving as liaison to management
of the Institute of East Asian Studies.
*Program Development 20%
In conjunction with the Chair, plan various lecture series, workshops, or
conferences. Help to conceive new topics for research or public
presentation, plan new programs or activities based on these topics, and
ensure their successful implementation. Seek new means to communicate
current research activities across campus and to the general community.
*Program/ Events Coordination 30%
Implement Center programs, including weekly (or more frequent) colloquia;
weekly (or more frequent) visiting scholar meetings; special workshops and
conferences; annual regional symposia; annual fellowship competitions;
advanced language-tutoring programs; and visiting delegation receptions.
Manage the Visiting Scholar Program, which hosts between 20 and 30 Korean
visiting scholars annually. .
*Fundraising and Donor Relations 10%
Help to implement a long-term fundraising plan for the Center. Identify,
using CADS and other tools, institutional and private donors, keeping donors
apprised of Center activities and goal. Manage funding contributions to
CKS. Work closely with the CKS Chair and IEAS leadership on fundraising
activities on behalf of Korean studies.
*Grant Writing and proposal development 10%
Identify institutional grant opportunities for Korean studies, and work with
the Chair as appropriate to develop proposals for enhancing Korean studies
at the Berkeley campus. Solicit input and data from relevant parties to
coordinate grant proposals. Coordinate process with with Research
Enterprise Services.
*Institutional Liaison 10%
Establish and maintain ties with peer research institutions and universities
worldwide. Attend professional conferences, make site visits to potential
collaborative partners, make arrangements for visiting delegations, and act
as host for visiting professors or dignitaries at Berkeley.
*Administration and financial management 20%
Work with the Research Enterprise Services and CKS Chair to manage
long-term fiscal planning for Center operations. Serve as the Center’s
resource on University administrative policies and guidelines, and interpret
these policies for the Chair’s understanding. Oversee business functions,
including reimbursements for travel and entertainment, purchasing and other
financial transactions. Manage the content of the Center’s website and
maintain its physical facilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to carry out multiple tasks and to prioritize competing demands.
Advanced editing skills; excellent English language skills sufficient for
grant proposal writing; ability to communicate effectively with academics,
both domestic and foreign, with professionalism and tact. Ability to
supervise staff.
Given the academic and programmatic planning responsibilities of the
position, knowledge of the fields of Korean studies and general knowledge of
East Asian studies, as well as some advanced academic training, are
necessary for full effectiveness in the job. Fluency in written and
spoken Korean is highly desirable in order manage the visiting scholar
program and interact with peer institutions in Korean
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Annual $42,000 to $58,500 (midpoint), depending on experience and
qualifications. 100% time career position. For information on the
